LAST CALL

“And lest your heart faint, and you fear for the rumor that will be heard in the land

(A rumor will come one year, and after that, in another year a rumor will come,

and violence in the land, ruler against ruler)”

(Jeremiah 51:46).

In spite of the fact that God used Babylon to judge other nations, it was also chastised and defeated by the Medes. The fact that the depredations of the Babylonians had been used by God to punish evil and to bring His people to repentance in no way lessened the responsibility of the Babylonians for their wicked deeds. Every man is held responsible for his own evil choices. God often makes the devices of the enemy serve purposes of mercy.”—PDF Bible Commentary, vol. 4, p. 332.

The inhabitants of Babylon trusted in their fortified city, but the Medes diverted the flow of the Euphrates River while the Babylonians were partying. The invaders entered and set the city on fire. Jeremiah had prophesied the fall of the Babylonian Empire, but he comforted the faithful and fearful Jews, he exhorted them to not dismay when calamities came. In one sense, the fall of Babylon was good news for them, because they had been mistreated and oppressed by that pagan nation. The time had come for Babylon to be judged and reduced to ruins, and the scattered Jews would return from their exile. The Babylonians had the opportunity to know God through men such as Daniel and Ezekiel, and the exiles were warned, «My people, go out of the midst of her! And let everyone deliver himself from the fierce anger of the Lord» (Jeremiah 51:45).

What Babylon do you find yourself in? A relationship that is not approved by God? A job where you cannot worship God on His holy day? A neighborhood that is corrupting your children? A city that has become a concrete- and smoke-filled jungle, that keeps you busy and takes time from you that you should be giving to God? A circle of friends that draw you away from God? Whatever your circumstances, you have a call to come out of such confusion. If you live in a city like Babylon, be an example of faithfulness and obedience to the True God. ‘As the captive exiles heeded the message, ‘Flee out of the midst of Babylon’ (Jeremiah 31:6), and were restored to the Land of Promise, so those who fear God today are heeding the message to withdraw front spiritual Babylon, and soon they are to stand as trophies of divine grace in the earth made new, the heavenly Canaan. “ —Prophets and Kings, ch. 59, p. 715.

Come out of any situation that is a Babylon for you.
