«l KNOW THAT MY REDEEMER LIVES»

«l know that my Redeemer lives, and He shall stand at last on the earth». Job 19:25

WESTMINSTER ABBEY is one of the most iconic places in the city of London. British monarchs are crowned at that church, funerals of members of the royal household are held there, and some of the most influential people in human history have been buried there. Over a million tourists visit Westminster Abbey each year, precisely to see those funeral monuments that are part of its British Gothic style.

One of the monuments that impressed me most in that emblematic building is the one adorning the tomb of George Frederic Händel, the famous German musician who became a naturalized British subject. Sculptor Louis Francois Roubiliac chiseled a life-size monument in which several instruments are on the left while Händel seems to be holding a sheet of music from his most famous piece: The Messiah. The text from Job 19:25 can be read on the sheet music: «l know that my Redeemer liveth, and that He shall stand at the latter day, upon the earth»; verse 26 follows: «and after my skin is destroyed, this I know, that in my flesh I shall see God.»

What a great hope! Death may put an end to our journey on earth; it may take our loved ones from us; it may showcase its strength and enclose us in a cold, dark tomb; but it will never be able to take away from us the certainty that our Redeemer lives. And if we die having placed our faith in Him, we will be raised from the dust of death. That Redeemer is the One who avenges our blood, who redeems us from slavery, who protects those who are forsaken. David described Him as the One «who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies» (Psalm 103:4).

For more than two centuries, Händel’s music has uplifted our souls, nurtured our spirit, and given us peace in restless times; but the only One who will be able to rescue us from the pit in which sin has plunged us is our great and powerful Redeemer.

Like Job’s life, yours may be complete chaos right now: sickness may be wasting your body away both within and Without, sadness may have nudged you to the brink of despair, but today you can claim the promise for yourself and proclaim that your Redeemer lives and you will soon see Him.
