«And after I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to myself, so that you will be where I am». John 14:3, GNT
IN ONE OF THE BEST-KNOWN PROMISES in the Bible, Jesus assured us, «And after I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to myself, so that you will be where I am» (John 14:3, GNT). While the disciples assumed the Lord’s departure was a definitive separation, through His departure He actually tried to assure them that they would be with their Lord forever. Therefore, in order to overcome that moment of distress, they needed to believe Jesus’s words: «l go to prepare a place for you» (NKJV). And that place would be «in [His] Father’s house» (John 14:2).
Jesus ascended into heaven as our «forerunner,» to prepare that place. A «forerunner» is someone who arrives before someone else, the one who prepares the way, the one who makes sure those who come behind him will have a safer journey, the one who goes out first to help the rest. How good it is to know that Jesus went out first to guarantee us a place in the «many mansions» there are in heaven!
We have to believe we will be there; we have to believe a place is reserved for us in the heavenly mansions. Now, if Christ is in heaven preparing a place for us, doesn’t that mean the world is not our place? While some of us toil and work hard, day and night, to make a place for ourselves in this world, Christ ministers night and day in the heavenly sanctuary for us to have a place in our Father’s home. This world is not our home. Our home is on high; it is in heaven.
When we feel we are losing it all in this life, let’s remember that in reality, we have nothing here worth hanging on to. Let’s remember that our place is in the Father’s house, our place is «where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God» (Colossians 3:1).
Today you can say, «It is these mansions that I am looking to; it is not the earthly mansions here, for erelong they are to be shaken down by the mighty earthquake; but those heavenly mansions that Christ has gone to prepare for the faithful.»*
