«l am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you». Genesis 28:15
IN ONE OF HIS SERMONS, American pastor Ethan Magness tells the story of Kevin Martin, a pastor of a megachurch in the United States. But the church Kevin Martin was pastoring faced so many challenges that the pastor became depressed and, in desperation, wrote a letter of resignation to the board, and another one to his wife and children, telling them he was leaving never to return.
After handing in his letters, Pastor Martin got into his car and, without telling anyone where he was going, he drove to a little town in Canada where he got a job as a logger. He bought a small metal trailer that he turned into a home and worked cutting wood.
One cold winter night, the temperature fell to twenty degrees below zero, and his small heater stopped working. In a fit of rage and incompetency, Kevin grabbed the heater and threw it out the window, only to immediately realize the terrible mistake he had made. He threw himself on the floor and began beating the metal floor with his fists as he yelled, «l hate You! Get out of my life! I am sick of this Christian farce!»
«l was so exhausted I could not even cry,» says Kevin. «Then, as I lay on the floor, I heard sobbing, but it was not mine. In the bright darkness of faith I heard Christ crying on the cross. That is when I understood that His blood was shed for me, Kevin the deserter, Kevin the blasphemer. Then I heard Jesus saying: ‘l am with you, Kevin.’ »
I am with you» is a promise that is repeated time and again throughout the Scriptures. And what is most striking to me is that this promise applies to every situation in our life. When Abraham lied about his relationship with Sarah, God told him, «l am with you» (Genesis 26:24). When Jacob was a fugitive in Bethel, God told him, «l am with you» (Genesis 28:15). When Jeremiah was fearful due to his great mission, God told him, «l am with you» (Jeremiah 1:19).
No matter what situation you are going through today, God tells you once again, «l am with you.»
