Evangeline Booth stood outside the courthouse watching the prisoners leave. Presently she heard screaming and cursing and saw guards dragging a woman through the door. Her face was contorted in fear, her hair matted and dirty. Torn clothes hung from her narrow shoulders. The woman had just been convicted and was being carted off to prison.
What could be done for her? Evangeline knew she had no time to preach a sermon or give her money or even sing. On impulse, she rushed over to the smelly, filthy, cursing woman and kissed her.
«Who did that?» the prisoner cried out. «Who kissed me? No one has kissed me since my mother died!» Then she lifted her tattered apron to her face and burst into tears. Like a gentle lamb, she let the officers lead her away.
Days later Miss Booth went to the prison to visit her. There she learned the whole tragic story. «When I was a baby, my father died,» the woman told her. «When I was seven, my mother and I were living in the slums when she fell ill. On her deathbed, she took my face in her hands and said, ‘My poor little girl. 0 God, have pity on my little girl and look after her when I’m gone.’ Then she kissed me and died.»
Evangeline explained that God loved her so much that He went to the cross and bore her sins so that He could put the kiss of pardon on every sinner’s face. The woman, touched by Miss Booth’s kindness and God’s undying affection, gave her heart to Jesus.
