«Some nations boast of their chariots and horses, but we boast in the name of the Lord our God» (Psalm 20:7, NLT).
They had suffered twenty years. King Jabin, with his nine hundred chariots of iron and a blood-thirsty army, constantly oppressed and ransacked them. Then, and only then, did they remember the Lord. God had mercy on them and sent a message of hope by mouth of a special woman: Deborah. This brave prophetess and judge had remained loyal in the midst of prevailing idolatry. Courageously. she called Barak. one of the most influential men in Israel, with clear instructions from God: «Gather ten thousand men of war to fight Sisera, the commander of Jabin’s army.» Then. Barak said the famous words: «l will go, but only if you go with me» (Judges 4:8, NLT). Frankly, I always thought Barak was a coward. However, Deborah was suggesting a suicidal operation!
Sisera had nine hundred chariots of iron, the most advanced war technology at that time. Not only did the Israelites not have chariots, but God had told them to fight on the slopes of Mount Tabor. In a valley! Precisely where the chariots would have the greatest advantage. They would be like cannon fodder! Imagine you have to fight off a war tank with only a sword. It would be ridiculous! If God was not with them, it would be a kamikaze operation.
Deborah did not refuse to go with Barak. She did not refuse to practice what she preached. Prophesying, she told him just before the battle: «Get ready! This is the day the Lord will give you victory over Sisera, for the Lord is marching ahead of you» (Judges 4:14, NLT). God was the commander in that war, the One who fought with much better weapons than chariots of iron. Jabin’s army went into a panic, because God sent rain and thunder, and made the wheels of their chariots get stuck in the mud. Taking advantage of the opportunity, Barak marched forward and killed Sisera’s warriors.
Sometimes, when God asks us to fight certain battles, we look at our weapons and think, «This is crazy! There is no way will be able to face this financial crisis, this marital problem, or this hardship with my children, with this rusty tin sword.» Dear friend. when the enemy surrounds you with nine hundred war tanks. remember that God goes before you. He is your commander.
Dear Lord, regardless of how strong my enemies are, You are even stronger! Regardless of how big my problems are, You are even bigger! My victory is assured; You go before me.
