«Ile who tills his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows frivolity will have poverty enough» (Proverbs 28: 19).
WORK
Manuel was a young man full of enthusiasm and a desire to reach high goals. Ever since he was a boy he had wanted to serve God through some church ministry. However, as the years went by, his prospects got darker and darker. He quit studying at an Adventist college and decided to start a business with his father’s help. There, in his small shop, he would tell me about his dreams of becoming a great businessman and devoting his time and resources to preach the gospel. The problem was he wasn’t very dependable: he got to his shop late, opened it whenever he wanted and even abandoned it for some time. Suddenly he would show up in a different city where he had decided to stay for a few days. His clients complained about his bad service whenever he went back to work. His attitudes really bothered his father, who warned him several times that he would stop supporting him if he went on that way. Manuel’s life was like a ship without a rudder, a boat adrift. The funny thing is he thought that God would bless his plans. And so the years went by. One day he married a girl and had to go through very hard financial times. His dreams never came true. Not the businesses, or service to God, or having time to preach His Word.
I truly believe that youth is a time to hope and dream. But, just as the Bible says, dreams have to come true through specific actions. Goals can’t be reached only by daydreaming. It’s crucial to have goals and know how we can reach them; in addition, we shouldn’t waste opportunities that come up and we should be responsible in life.
Few young people realize the opportunities they have today will likely never come up again. Quitting school, losing a business, squandering money or losing your parents’ support are mistakes that could cost you very dearly later on. It’s just that Life goes by too quickly and, by the time you realize it, things are never the same again.
Do you know how to work? Have you learned to be a responsible person? Can others trust that you’ll do a good job when asked to do it? Learning that is extremely important in life.
Ask the Lord today to help you be a hard-working, responsible person.
