«Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the fish’s belly. And he said: ‘l cried out to the Lord because of my affliction, and He answered me. out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and You heard my voice (Jonah 2:1,2).
JOSÉ WAS a young man from El Salvador who liked to swim and, in fact, swam very well. On one occasion, accompanied by his friends, José was playing among the ocean waves while they watched him from the safety of the sandy shore. He kept going in deeper, without any fear of what might happen. He felt sure of his skills in the water, until, in an instant, he began to spin uncontrollably, A huge wave had dragged him with such force that he tat himself sinking to the bottom and could not find a way to stay afloat. He realized he was drowning. He says that a feeling of despair came over him and, in his distress, he cried out, «My God, if You save me today from death, I will strive to return to Your ways!» God saved José from death at that time, and today José is a man of prayer.
In the Bible we find another man who had problems on the high seas, to such a point that he believed he would drown. I am talking about Jonah. He walked away from God because of a message God asked him to deliver. Instead of traveling to Nineveh to collaborate with the Lord in the cause of the salvation of souls, he went in the opposite direction, fleeing the presence of the Almighty. But my dear friend, that is impossible. We cannot run away from God.
It was precisely on the ship chat he boarded to evade the Lord that his reality caught up to him. Thrown into the water by the others on the boat, he suddenly found himself in a raging sea. ‘The sea, however, was calmed by divine intervention and Jonah was swallowed by a great fish.»Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the fish’s belly. And he said: ‘I cried out to Lord because of my affliction, and He answered me. out of the belly of I cried, and You heard my voice. For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the floods surrounded me; all Your billows and Your waves passed over me. Then I said, «l have been cast out of Your sight.”… When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the Lord….Salvation is of the Lord»‘ (Jonah 2).
At any point in our lives, we can be a Jonah or a José. Let us remember that God is there; then let us pray and trust in His salvation.
