JERUSALEM

«Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down

out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband»

(Revelation 21:2).

When we’ve been there ten thousand years, will we start to get bored? If going to heaven means playing the harp while floating on a cloud, I’d be bored after ten minutes (maybe I could last twenty minutes, if they let me play hopscotch and jump from cloud to cloud). The reality is that as long as our ideas about Heaven and the New Earth are not based on the Bible, eternity will not be able to captivate us. Spending a week of vacation on the beach, sunbathing, doing nothing, sounds fantastic. However, spending a decade on the same beach, in the same deck chair, without being able to do anything, would be torture.

“Unbiblical stereotypes of heaven as a vague, disembodied existence do us much more harm than we realize. They diminish our anticipation of heaven and prevent us from believing that it really is our home,» reflects Randy Alcorn in his article «Heaven: On the Way Home.» The Bible describes the New Jerusalem as a magnificently designed, opulent city. In it we will have a job to do, but without running out of energy or resources. In the New Earth we will be surrounded by the people we love, there will be parties and banquets with the best food we have ever tasted. We will not get bored, because we will continue learning and growing. Even our capacity to enjoy will be infinitely greater than what we have now. We will be able to discover mysteries that science has not yet revealed and visit other worlds. «The Lord showed me other worlds in vision,» Ellen White writes in Early Writings. «Wings were given to me and an angel escorted me from the city to a bright and glorious place. […] The inhabitants of that place were of all sizes; they were noble, majestic and beautiful. […] The angel told me then, […] if you are faithful, you will have, with the 144,000, the privilege of visiting all the worlds and seeing the work of God’s hands» (p. 39).

Living with Jesus for eternity will be an experience of such exuberant beauty that words cannot describe it. For this reason, I ask the Holy Spirit to call you with his inexpressible groans like a chirping dove; may it inspire you to look to the sky and strengthen you to stand firm.

Holy Spirit, you enlighten my mind and my heart with Your presence.

Please sanctify my imagination while I imagine what it will be like

to live with you on the New Earth. Make the beauty if this promise leave

such a clear mark inside me that it fills me with longing for my true home.
