JEALOUSY

Q: I have a problem with jealousy. I enjoy gymnastics a lot, but two of my friends seem better at it than I am. I always feel as if I have to try to do better than they. What can I do?

A: Your problem is one that probably all of us have had to deal with at some time in our lives. It’s natural to want to excel at whatever we do. And it’s also natural—though not right—to feel jealous when somebody else can do something better than we can. But it helps to remember that God has given all of us special talents to use for His glory. And when we truly care about someone, we should be happy when they succeed, even if it means watching them outshine us.

An old saying declares that «no matter how good you are at something, there’s always someone who’s better at it.»

A good remedy for jealousy is to turn (with God’s help) those jealous feelings into respect and encouragement. Praise your friends when you see them doing well.

We’re glad that you’ve already taken the first step in overcoming jealousy by admitting that you have the problem. The next step is to pray and ask God to help you deal with your feelings. The third step is to accept yourself for who you are and thank God for the talents He has given you. Ask Him to help you to be not the best, but your best. Finally, be content with whatever gifts God chooses to bless you with.
