IS IGNORANCE A SIGN OF HOLINESS?

«If you are wise, you are wise for yourself, and if you scoff, you will bear it alone» (Proverbs 9:12).

WISDOM

God powerfully used Moses, Daniel and Paul due to their solid education, and not despite it. It’s true the Lord had to teach additional lessons both to Moses and to Paul, but it was because they lacked balance between their original instruction and the need to understand divine perspective, and to be more humble and tender as leaders of God’s people. Now it’s appropriate to consider the following statement, «Ignorance will not increase the humility or spirituality of any professed follower of Christ. The truths of the Divine Word can be best appreciated by an intellectual Christian. Christ can be best glorified by those who serve Him intelligently. The great object of education is to enable us to use the powers which God has given us in such a manner as will best represent the religion of the Bible and promote the glory of God»—Mind, Character and Personality, vol. 1, ch. 38, p. 364.

Knowledge is part of God’s nature (Proverbs 1:7). He is omniscient, He knows everything there is to know (Psalm 139). He doesn’t disdain knowledge. That’s  why human beings—created in his image and likeness—in their hearts have the seed of wanting to know, discover, research and ask about their surroundings and themselves. Knowledge—including knowledge about God—detracts merit to Christian life when it turns into an end in itself and not a means to obtain a purpose.—George R. Knight, Myths in Adventism, Hagerstown: Review and Herald, 2009, pp. 114-119.

For a Christian, life goes beyond just mastering one area of knowledge. Instead, the Christian’s knowledge is always a means through which to have healthy relationships both with God and others. According to the Bible, everything that turns into an end in itself becomes an idol. The same happens with knowledge—even if  something good—, because when it’s an end in itself it becomes an escape from reality, which is the antithesis of Biblical Christianity, which seeks to confront the individual with a double reality: his condition before God and his responsibility to enrich the lives of those around him through the use of his talents.

Never forget that knowledge is not neutral. It can become a powerful tool for good or for evil, depending on the use it’s given. That’s why seek wisdom to honor the heavenly Father.
