IS GOD LEADING US OR NOT?

«So he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the contention of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying, ‘Is the Lord among us or not?’ » (Exodus 17:7, NKJV).

We normally think that if God is leading us, the path will be easy. However, the notion that God is some kind of full-risk insurance does not come from the Bible. In fact, the exodus of the children of Israel proves that God Himself may lead us into difficult situations. Following the pillar of cloud and fire, the Israelites left the desert of Sin and camped at Rephidim (Exodus 17). Although God had led them, they did not find water there to drink. So the people did what many of us tend to do: they doubted and got stressed. Did we misunderstand the signal? Was the cloud perhaps leading us elsewhere? Is the Lord among us or not?

Sometimes God leads us to difficult places on purpose. In that case, the challenges we have to face are not a sign that we are off course, but a chance to grow. Sometimes God deliberately does not give us all the information to force us to walk closer to Him.

In the book Acts of the Apostles, Ellen G. White comments, «The Lord does not always make everything plain before His servants. He sometimes tries the confidence of His people by bringing about circumstances which compel them to move forward in faith. Often He brings them into strait and trying places, and bids them advance.»—ch. 33, p. 357. In those situations, when we move forward in faith, we witness miracles we would not otherwise see. In the case of the children of Israel at Rephidim, God made water spring forth from a rock, proving that He can meet our needs even in the direst circumstances.

If God led you to do something, do not let hardships make you doubt His calling. If He told you to raise your children at home, change a job or start a new project, He will also provide for every one of your needs. God does not always show us how He will do it, but He is always faithful.

Lord, thank You for walking beside me each day.
When challenges and hardships come, help me not to doubt my calling and to remember that I am never alone.
You can meet all my needs, even in the direst of circumstances.
