INVESTING IN OUR SPIRITUAL FAITH

«The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell in it forever» (Psalm 37:29).

EVERY AFTERNOON, my two children and I have the same routine: first I supervise their school assignments; then the three of us have worship in the middle of the afternoon, we play a little (because it cannot be all work and reverence), we have supper, and finally, they know that they have to take a bath before they go to bed. I find it interesting that they enjoy very much everything they do up to this point; moreover, they even do their homework willingly and without my having to tell them twice. However, when we get to bath time, neither of the two wants to take a bath; they do not like it and I have to insist quite a bit. Every time this moment arrives, one of my children says it is the other one’s turn and the other gives up his or her turn to the first, until finally, someone is the first to give in. When they come out of the tub, the two acknowledge that the bath cleans them and takes away the tensions of the day, but that is after, never before.

It is not only children who show reticence toward certain essential health habits, but adults also very often resist understanding and putting into practice habits that are essential for our health—in this case, religious health. Following are some examples.

Cultivating spiritual purity: this is based on avoiding those habits that poison us, such as criticism; gossiping; lying (or small deceptions); keeping bad company; or watching television programs that not only do not contribute anything, but turn our minds to thoughts that are not of any use.

Strengthening the habits that allow us to know our God more and better: reading the Bible (see 1 Peter 1:23), as well as other Christian books and those about personal growth; setting aside time for daily prayer; and interacting with people who give a lot of importance to God in their lives, because we have been created to connect and derive great lessons of faith from that human connection.

Examining ourselves and seeing in what aspects we need God’s help to grow. «Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?’ (2 Corinthians 13:5). If your relationship with God is not as solid as it should be, make the adjustments necessary in your daily routine.
