In 1954 Mrs. Hewlett Hodges was asleep on her couch when a deafening boom! shook her awake. She jumped to her feet and looked around. Something had ripped a round hole in the ceiling, the radio lay smashed on the floor, and among the debris from the roof lay a softball-sized rock.
When the woman bent to pick it up, she felt a pain in her left hip and hand. The rock was much heavier than she expected, and warm.
Specialists confirmed that a meteorite had hit her, but it was only a glancing blow. Before hitting her in the hip, the nine-pound meteorite had crashed through the roof and ceiling of her house and then bounced off her radio.
Anytime you walk across a field, down a trail, or along a mountain path, you are probably stepping on meteorites. That’s because hundreds of thousands of them have been landing on the earth for thousands of years, and most of them haven’t been found.
Most meteorites are asteroids that have strayed from their orbit between Mars and Jupiter. Others are actually pieces of Mars or the moon. When an asteroid hit one of these bodies, it throws rocks into space. The rocks get caught in Earth’s gravitational pull and land on our planet.
One of the most spectacular meteorite showers took place on November 13,1833. Experts estimate that 240,000 meteorites were visible in a nine-hour period.
