So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. GENESIS 28:11, NKJV
The first day we arrived in Cairo was a bumpy one. As students we were poor, and we couldn’t afford fancy lodging or food. We took the public bus from the airport to the center of Cairo, where it dropped us off. It was about 10:00 P.M., and we knew it was not a great time to arrive in a strange city. A guy pointed us in the direction of where we might be able to find lodging nearby. We walked a few blocks and finally found a sign that said «Hotel-5th floor:’ We decided to go up—we were ready to rest. On the fifth floor we found the hotel. To our surprise, they had a room available. To our bigger surprise, the cost was only one dollar for the room. Naturally, this immediately made us concerned and suspicious, but we were so tired we figured we could stay anywhere for just one night. The owner led us down the hall to our room, where we soon found out we had overpaid for our room. The room had no door. The beds were ancient metal beds with a piece of foam on top. There was no operable bathroom or running water anywhere on the floor, and the window was just an opening in the wall looking to the courtyard. No matter what country you are traveling in, each country has its nice high-end accommodations as well as its low-end accommodations. We’re pretty sure we found the low end in Egypt, but we were so exhausted, we stayed there anyway.
One night when Jacob was traveling, the Bible says, he used a rock as a pillow. I can sort of relate to that, but the important thing to remember is that whether you are sleeping in a comfy bed or your pillow is a rock, may the last thing you do each day be to pray that GOD blesses you as you rest.
