«IN YOUR OLD AGE, I WILL SUSTAIN YOU»

«Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you» (Isaiah 46:4, NIV).

AS I WRITE this devotional, Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, is eighty-one years old. Joe Biden has just become president of the country at the age of seventy-eight, becoming the oldest person to hold that office. Peruvian newspapers aren’t ignoring the graduation of eightynine-year-old Alejo Ruiz, who has just finished his degree in industrial electronics. A couple of years ago, the Benemérita Universidad de Puebla, in Mexico, introduced us to its oldest graduate: Felipe Espinosa Tecuapetla, who graduated with a degree in industrial management and process engineering at the age of eighty-four. These examples prove that old age doesn’t have to be an unproductive stage in life, a time in which we only live off memories of the past. The last stage of our life can be as productive and dream-filled as the teenage years.

The wise man declared in writing that «the beauty of old men is the grey head» (Proverbs 20:29, KJV). The Hebrew noun hädär, translated as «beauty,» entails the idea of dignity, magnificence, splendor, glory. Commenting on this verse, Derek Kidner says that «each age has its appointed excellence, to be respected and enjoyed in its time.” Reaching old age is a divine blessing, and as such it should be a blessing to all those around us as long as there is breath of life within us.

If you feel that, because of your many years, your life is no longer useful, bear in mind what the psalmist said: «Now that I am old and gray, do not abandon me, O God. Let me proclaim your power to this new generation, your mighty miracles to all who come after me” (Psalm 71:18, NLT).

Now that the years of walking slowly have come to your life, and the hubbub has been left behind, God’s promise is this: «Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you» (Isaiah 46:4, NIV).

«Even to your old age»—a stage we are to live with dignity, magnificence, and splendor, glorifying Him who sustains us.
