JoEllen Johnson, mother of a large family, noticed that her three-old little son was constantly following her everywhere. The child became a hindrance that prevented his mother from finishing the household chores quickly. She tried to convince him to play somewhere else but the child kept following her every step. When his mother told him not to follow her anymore, he replied with a smile on his face:
«I want to be with you.
«Finally, the mother gave up and said,
«Okay, but please, tell me, why are you always at my feet?»
The little one answered,
«Our preschool teacher told us to always follow the footsteps of Jesus, and because,
I can’t see Jesus, I just follow you.
With joyful tears, JoEllen hugged her little boy and sat down to talk to him for a while. Such a simple example became so inspiring
Today’s text invites us to follow the footsteps of Jesus. But the message is presented in the context of grief. In other words, Christ suffered for us and invites us to follow His example. Suffering is part of knowing Jesus because His life was about suffering: being wounded, beaten, punished, and affected (Isa. 53). Suffering also leads to perfection (1 Pet. 5:10). Testing leads to patience which ends up making us perfect and complete, lacking nothing (James 1:3-4).
Being a father or mother sometimes translates into suffering. In fact, besides the many satisfactions that children bring to their parents, they are also sources of concern, anxiety, and pain, and bring problems related to health, relationships, character, studies, future plans, and even open defiance. Raising and educating our children is often a challenge, so an ideal child-parent relationship is not easy. The solution necessarily comes from both sides, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right» (Eph. 6: 1) and also «fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath» (v. 4). In any case, it is not an easy task and it requires a great deal of wisdom. Today, ask God for this gift of wisdom with respect to family relationships. His unfailing promise is the following: «If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him» (James 1:5)
