Two armies from opposing provinces in India faced each other for battle. The peshwa (chief officer) of one of the armies had given the flag of their province to his most trusted elephant driver. «Keep it flying!» he’d ordered.
In the ensuing battle both sides gained and lost ground. Then things went bad for the peshwa and his men. Many of his soldiers were about to turn and run when, through the blowing smoke, they saw their flag flying above the elephant and its driver lying dead at its feet. The last command uttered by the dying driver had been, «Stay. Do not move!» Until it heard otherwise, the elephant wasn’t going anywhere.
Seeing the flag electrified the soldiers. With renewed determination, they swept down the hill, forcing their enemy out of the valley. The faithful elephant stood its ground, surrounded by the carnage of war.
The victorious soldiers gathered about their elephant and showered it with praise. As they were preparing to leave, they discovered that the animal wouldn’t budge. Other drivers tried to get it to move, but it remained at its post.
Three days went by, and still the elephant stood, flag fluttering above it.
The men remembered that the dead driver had a son, a young boy who’d taken part in the elephant’s training. Even though he lived 100 miles away, they sent for him. When he arrived, the elephant recognized the boy’s voice and followed him obediently from the battlefield.
You may find yourselves among friends being swept into various kinds of sin. If this happens, remember the elephant. Stay true to the voice of God, and His Son—always.
