IMITATING NATURE

«Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour»(1 Peter 5:8).

NATURE IS TRULY FASCINATING. From the tiny insect formed in such a complex way, the wild plants filled with beauty, and each one of the living beings we find around us, we can learn important lessons for our spiritual lives.

One of the most fascinating things of nature is how certain plants defend themselves from the presence of insect eggs on their leaves. As you know, before they become so lovely, butterflies go through a phase in which they are simple caterpillars, inelegant worms (to put it nicely). When the female butterfly needs a place to lay her eggs to reproduce, she normally goes to plant leaves, but some species of plants have a very interesting defense mechanism precisely to prevent this from happening. It is a type of mimicry or camouflage that consists in generating little balls on the leaves that are similar to the egg’s butterflies lay. In that way, those «little balls» make the insect think that the plant is already taken, having the eggs of another female. Believing that her eggs will have less probability of doing well if they have to share the leaves with the eggs of another insect, it prefers to go somewhere else. The result is that the plant is safe and does not run the risk of dying because of the caterpillar.

Plants do this so that their own existence is not jeopardized. It is the way they seek to outwit the devourer. What a fascinating strategy! What about you? What strategies do you use so you do not fall into the enemy’s snare? Are you at least conscious that there is an enemy, that it is the devil, and that he is seeking those he can devour? It is crucial to understand this clearly every morning, since we need to defend ourselves from the snares of the devil with God’s help.

The apostle Peter advises us that the first step we have to take is to be «sober.» According to Webster’s Dictionary, being «sober» is being «temperate, not drunk, serious.» «But the end of all things is at hand; therefore, be serious and watchful in your prayers» (1 Peter 4:7).

Let us live a simple life, being on guard and with our senses alert.
