«No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us» (l John 4: 12).
JOSH WAS JUST A YOUNG MAN, but he longed to know what life meant. «Who am I?» «What am I here for?» «Where am I going?» he wondered. He tried to find the answers in the village church where he grew up in a rural area of Michigan, but the attempt proved in vain. He then looked for them at the university where he had enrolled to study law. «This is an academic environment. I should find answers to my concerns here,» he thought.
One day, while he was walking through the university, Josh saw a student wearing a T-shirt that said, «Don’t follow me. I’m lost.» For Josh, that message illustrated exactly what was happening at that institution. Nobody knew where he or she was going. The worst part was that he did not know, either. Then something happened that would change his life forever. He met a group of eight students and two teachers who met to study topics of interest. It struck him that these people looked different from the others, so he decided to attend their meetings. After two weeks, while discussing various issues, the conversation addressed the issue of religion. This was the last thing Josh wanted to hear, so he took a hostile stance. Among other things, he said sarcastically that Christianity was not for intellectuals. Since no one responded, Josh then turned to a young woman in the group.
«You, tell me. What changed your life?»
«Jesus Christ,» she said, looking Josh directly in the eye.
«Please!» Josh replied. «Don’t talk to me about that. I’m sick of religion!»
«I didn’t say ‘religion,’ » she replied. «I said, ‘Jesus Christ.’ »
Surprised by the young woman’s response, Josh apologized and explained his attitude toward religion. In response, the members of the group proposed a challenge: to examine objectively the biblical statement that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Josh gladly accepted the challenge in order to prove that such a claim was false.
What was the result? While examining the evidence, Josh was drawn to Jesus. «It was not historical evidence,» he wrote, «that attracted me to Jesus Christ. It was His love; a love that I had already seen manifested in the lives of a group of Christians.
How interesting! It was not the historical evidence, nor was it the doctrines that impacted Josh McDowell’s life. It was the love of Christ manifested in the lives of a group of believers. What a tremendous challenge you and I have! «Let us remember that a Christlike life is the most powerful argument that can be advanced in favor of Christianity.»—Christian Service, ch. 1, p. 26.
Holy Spirit, please dwell in my heart today.
Only then will I be able to spread the love of Christ around me.
