«Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith»(Hebrews 12: 1, 2).
FIRST THEY CALLED IT «The Miracle Mile,» then it got coined with the term «The Mile of the Century,» and that’s exactly what it turned out to be: the place where the competition between the two fastest men on the planet—Roger Bannister and John Landy—who got pitted against each other in a one-mile race, took place.
The year: 1954. The place: Vancouver, Canada. The stage: the Vancouver Commonwealth Games. By then the two athletes had managed to break the four-minute barrier, the record for that distance. The first to do so was Bannister, with a speed of 3:59.4, in May 1953. Soon after, in June of that same year, Landy managed to stop the clock at 3:58, thus becoming the owner of the new record. Which of the two would prevail?
When the starting signal was given, Landy shot to the front as usual. Bannister followed him closely. Soon the other contenders were left far behind. Meanwhile, in the stands, a crowd of 35,000 fans watched in expectation.
When he reached the last quarter mile, Landy made his way to the front. With the finish line barely eighty yards away, Landy heard a big commotion coming from the crowd. That could only mean one thing: Bannister was getting dangerously close. Then, just before he got to the finish line, Landy looked back over his left shoulder. He wanted to verify his opponent’s position. At that very moment, Bannister overtook him on the right side just as they reached the finish line! A statue in Vancouver stands today in commemoration of the dramatic ending.
The new year has begun. The world is watching us. How will we run «the race that is set before us»? Interested in a plan with guaranteed positive results? Well here goes.
Taking into account . . .
the fact that we are not alone in this race and that we have before us «a huge crowd of witnesses;» the faithful men and women who preceded us and who were winners thanks to the blood of the Lamb
Let’s resolve to…
«Strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up.»
Not look back unless its to remember how God has guided us so far. Run with endurance the race, by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.
Thank you, heavenly Father, because You’re not only at the beginning, but also at the end of our race. Please help us, in the year that is beginning, to lay aside anything that dishonors Your holy name.
Above all, help us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. With Him at our side, our victory is guaranteed!
