«I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts» (Jeremiah 31:33).
WHAT LOST TREASURE would you most like to find?» That was the question posed by The Atlantic magazine. A reader replied they would love to find «The Concert» by Vermeer, a painting that was stolen in 1990 and still has not been found. Another reader, who lives in Orlando, United States, said he wanted to find the ark of the covenant, the furnishing of the Israelite tabernacle where the Ten Commandments were kept. Actually, lots of people have wanted to find that magnificent object, located in the Most Holy place of the Hebrew sanctuary.
The ark’s importance was not found in the gold that was used to cover its outside and inside, nor in its moldings or rings, nor in its gold-covered poles or the «mercy seat of pure gold» that was placed on top of it. The greatness of the ark consisted in this: «You shall put the mercy seat on top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the Testimony that I will give you. And there I will meet with you, and I will speak with you from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim which are on the ark of the Testimony, about everything which I will give you in commandment to the children of Israel» (Exodus 25:21, 22). The relationship between the ark and the testimony was so significant that the piece of furniture became known as the «ark of the Testimony» (Joshua 4:16). It’s not the chest, but what the chest contains that is valuable. People want to find the ark, but the ark was simply the chest—the treasure was inside. And what was in it? The Ten Commandments!
The psalmist says that the Lord’s commandments «are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold» (Psalm 19:10, NLT). It’s interesting that the word «desirable,» hämäd in Hebrew, is the same word that is used in the tenth commandment: «You shall not covet.» What the verse is telling us is that «God’s commandments are to be coveted.»
It’s true that we haven’t been able to find the ark; however, we can obtain the treasure that was kept in it and apply it to our lives. In fact, there’s another «ark» in which those commandments will be kept, and that’s why the God who placed the Commandments in the ark now makes us this great promise: «I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts» (Jeremiah 31:3).
It’s not about looking for the ark; it’s about allowing God to make us the «ark» in which He puts His law today.
