» I WILL NOT LOOK IN ANGER UPON YOU»

«l will not look in anger upon you; for I am merciful, saith Jehovah» (Jeremiah 3:12, ASV).

ALTHOUGH Israel and Egypt have had a good relationship after signing a peace treaty in 1979, they were archenemies before signing it. During the 1973 Arab-Israeli War (also known as Yom Kippur War), someone played an important role for both countries. It was Egyptian multimillionaire Ashraf Marwan (1944-2007). He was an aide to, and son-in-law of, Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser, After Nasser’s death, Marwan became a close confidant to the next Egyptian president, Anwar Sadat. The Egyptians were so convinced of his loyalty that, after his death in 2007, then-current president Hosni Mubarak referred to him as a «patriot who was loyal to his country.»

What’s surprising is that Israel regards Ashraf Marwan as one of the best spies in the Mossad (the Israeli Intelligence Service). In his book, The Angel: The Egyptian Spy Who Saved Israel, Uri Bar Joseph states that as a Mossad agent, Marwan shared key information regarding Egypt’s war plans against Israel, and that such information saved the lives of thousands of Israelis. Evidently, Ashraf Marwan managed to get along with both Egypt and Israel, since they declared him a national hero in both countries.

Perhaps some may assume they can be like Ashraf Marwan in their spiritual life, and think it’s possible to be okay with both God and Satan. But Jesus said, «No one can serve two masters» (Matt. 6:24). Trying to lead a spiritual double life is extremely foolish because any «flirting» with Satan disqualifies us before God. James said it this way: «Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God» (James 4:4, NIV).

In the days of the prophet Jeremiah, when the nation of Judah established alliances with heathen gods and pretended to continue to serving God, the Lord said, » ‘Return backsliding Israel … I will not look in anger upon you» (Jeremiah 3:12, ASV).

To return is to turn around, to point our lives in a new direction, to cease to be on the enemy’s side, to distance ourselves from sin and commit ourselves exclusively to God. This promise is made to all of us who decide to return to our Father: «l will not look in anger upon you.» Will we choose to be on the Lord’s side?
