«l will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion». Exodus 33:19
CHRISTIAN SINGER Marcos Vidal recounts about how while he was dining at a pastor’s home, the minister’s wife mentioned how exciting it would be to be able to speak to God directly. That comment caused Vidal to reflect deeply on the matter, and from there the idea of writing the song «Cara a cara» («Face to Face») arose. In the refrain, Vidal repeats: «Just let me look at You face to face and get lost like a child in your gaze; and let a lot of time go by, and let no one say anything, because I am seeing the Master face to face.»
The Bible says the Lord «spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend» (Exodus 33:11). However, despite having these types of conversations, Moses approached God and told him, «Please, show me Your glory» (verse 18). In response to his request, •the Lord told him: «l will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion» (verse 19).
It is interesting that in Exodus the Lord «passes» through something on two occasions. The first time is during the Passover, and in Exodus 12:12 the Lord says, «l will pass through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike.» The second time is when He says in Exodus 33:19: «l will make all My goodness pass before you.» Regarding this, Victor Hamilton explains that passing through Egypt was a scene of judgment; but the second passing, in Exodus 33, is a manifestation of His «benevolence.»*
Sometimes we go around seeking an extraordinary manifestation, a dazzling incident, a great miracle that will truly prove to us God is with us. But God’s answer to Moses’s request was very clear: «Just let My goodness pass before you.» The glorious presence is manifested in our life when the Lord passes before us to collect our abundant tears, when He passes by to comfort us and bring peace into our lives, when He passes through to comfort those who are broken both inside and outside.
Today God can pass by, not to harm you like He did the Egyptians, but to make you feel His glorious goodness.
