MARILYN MULERO’S LAWYERS recommended that she accept the plea bargain the prosecutor was offering her and plead guilty to having committed a double murder in the city of Chicago, in the United States. By doing this, Mulero relinquished her rights, thereby releasing the other party from having to •present proof in a trial before a jury and was given the death penalty. After reading about her case in the newspaper, lawyer Justin Brooks contacted her and decided to take on the case with the help of four young Law students in order to overturn the sentence.
As they studied her case, Brooks’s team discovered that Mulero’s lawyers had not done their job well, that there had been false witnesses, and that the police investigation had been deficient. Brooks appealed the jury’s decision, went before a new jury, fought hard for Mulero’s life, and, after twenty-five long years of struggle, she was set free after it was proven she was innocent. Mulero had finally been able to have a lawyer who was willing to fight for her, believed in her innocence, did not consider giving up was a viable option, and kept on fighting for her until she was released. Brooks did not abandon her.
This experience reminded me of two verses found in Isaiah:
* «The poor and needy seek water, but there is none, their tongues fail for thirst. l, the Lord, will hear them; l, the God of Israel, will not forsake them» (Isaiah 41:17).
* «l will lead the blind along an unfamiliar way; I will guide them down paths they have never traveled. I will turn the darkness in front of them into light, and level out the rough ground. This is what I will do for them. I will not abandon them» (Isaiah 42:16, NET).
Our kind God is willing to take on the case of those who are afflicted, needy, and blind—the cases that are apparently lost, the lives that seem irreparable—to give them true freedom.
You might be going through a rough, dark time in your life. You feel sentenced, with no hope that things will change or that anyone will come to your aid. But today the heavenly Lawyer is ready to take on your case and turn the rough experience you are currently undergoing into level ground. He will do that and not abandon you.
