«To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God» (Revelation 2:7).
I»M NOT SURE if Miyazaki mangoes from Japan are more delicious than Banilejo mangoes from the Dominican Republic; however, given the price difference, Miyazaki mangoes must be superior to those from my home country. I had never heard of them until I read a news article about Sankalp and Rani Parihar; two Indian farmers who had to hire security guards and buy nine watchdogs to guard the Miyazaki mango orchard they had planted . . . by accident!!!
And why did Sankalp and Parihar do so much to protect their orchard? Because even though one of these mangoes is normally priced at fifty dollars, these farmers have been offered almost three hundred dollars per fruit. A jeweler from Bombay was even willing to pay whatever price the farmers set, but even so, he was unable to get Sankalp and Rani to sell him their mangoes. They are so valuable that someone in Japan went as far as paying 2,500 dollars for two Miyazaki mangoes, also known as «Eggs of the Sun.»
I admit that I’d like to try one of these mangoes someday, even though I’m not willing to pay the price that many are willing to (and have already offered). But although we don’t have the chance to taste the sweetness of these mangoes, we do have the privilege of waiting for the fulfillment of the following Bible promise: «In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations» (Revelation 22:2). Ezekiel, which is where the statement in Revelation comes from, adds that «their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for medicine» (Ezekiel 47:12). Here we have the promise of a restored paradise, offered to us all, which cost the high price of Christ’s death; a paradise in which we will be able to enjoy wonderful fruits that are for eternal life.
A couple of farmers in India inadvertently planted Miyazaki mangoes, the most expensive mango variety available, whereas God plants faith within us and a longing for everlasting life, in which we will be able to freely enjoy the most valuable fruit of all: the fruit of the tree of life. He who eats of that tree will never die.
