«I will always thank you, God, for what you have done» (Psalm 52:9, GNT).
ONE DAY, A. J. Jacobs woke up with an idea in mind: to live for a year according to what the Bible said. No, Jacobs was not a believer; instead, he was an agnostic who decided to impose that challenge on himself. As he recounts in his book The Year of Living Biblically, Jacobs began day 64 by quoting Deuteronomy 8:10: «When you have eaten your fill, be sure to praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you» (NLT). That day he decided to live as a grateful person.
So when he ate his pita bread with hummus, he expressed his gratefulness to the Lord, but also gave thanks for «the farmer who grew the chickpeas for the hummus. And the workers who picked the chickpeas. And the truckers who drove them to the store. And the old Italian lady who sold the hummus to me.» Later on, he adds that prayers of thanksgiving remind him «that the food didn’t spontaneously generate in my fridge. They make me feel more connected, more grateful, more grounded, more aware of my place in this complicated hummus cycle … Basically, they help me get outside of my self-obsessed cranium.»
Jacobs’s example should provide sufficient motivation for us to make today, and every day, a day of thanksgiving to God for the simplest details in life. Together with the psalmist, let’s say, «We give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks!» (Psalm 75:1). Giving thanks makes us understand that we depend entirely on our heavenly Father. In fact, gratitude is part of the spiritual habits that define our Christian life: «Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus» (1 Thessalonians 5:18, NIV).
Right now, in the lines below, let’s write the many reasons we have for giving thanks to God. Let’s make this promise today: «I will always thank you, God, for what you have done» (Psalm 52:9, GNT).
