Principles and Value
“I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You” (Job 42:5).
Job is one of the most resilient persons found in the Bible. He had everything and he lost everything. The Book of Job shows the confusion and suffering of a righteous man who suffers from evil’s most horrendous blows. However, as his own testimony proves, before this intense suffering, he only knew God by’ reputation. It was only after his tough trials that he came to truly know and experience God personally.
Fanny Crosby (1820-1915) was a songwriter, composer, and poet who is considered one of the most prolific songwriters Her legacy is fundamentally religious and includes more than six thousand hymns and religious songs like The Lord in Zion Reigneth, Safe in the Arms of Jesus, To the Work, and Jesus Is Tenderly Calling you Home. When she was six weeks old, she caught a respiratory infection that caused an inflammation in her eyes. village doctor was away on a trip and a neighbor recommended applying spicy mustard poultices to her eyes. The «treatment» damaged her optical nerves and she went blind for the rest of her life. When she was five years old, she lost her father. In spite of these adversities, she grew up normally and began her musical success story at sixteen by learning to play the piano, the harp, the guitar, and the organ.
One day, a clergyman who was trying to show her some kindness told her:
«It’s a shame that the Master, having given you so much gifts, didn’t give you the gift of sight.»
Right away, Fanny replied:
«Do you know what would have been my request at birth? I would have asked to be born blind.»
«But why?» inquired the religious man.
Fanny answered:
«Because when Jesus comes back, the first thing I will see will be the face of my Savior!»
This woman of God was a blessing to all those who knew her. Her hymns were, and still are a source of inspiration for many.
Job enjoyed the gift of eyesight but Fanny did not. However, they both could «see» God with their mind and heart. They both will also see Him face to face on the day that He returns, fulfilling Job’s words: «For I know that my Redeemer lives, and He shall stand at last on the earth; and after my skin is destroyed, this I know, that in my flesh I shall see God» (Job 19:25, 26). You and I can also have this privilege. Let us lift and regain our spirits, knowing we will see Jesus face to face, when He comes back to take us to Heaven.
