«Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray» (James 5:13).
MARIA AND GABRIEL, her husband, lived with their four children in a mountainous area in El Chimbo, a beautiful place in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. However, she had begun to suffer from a flow of blood that did not give her any rest either day or night. Her case was similar to that of the woman in the Bible story (see Luke 8:43—48), but Maria had not visited any doctor, preferring to trust in natural remedies.
Thin, haggard, and with no energy, Maria gathered up her belongings and moved with her family to a remote place in the hope that the heat would be beneficial to her health. However, she got worse every day: between the flow of blood and not eating very much, her body was being consumed by anemia. In the meantime, her husband Gabriel traveled on foot several nights a week to attend church. He felt a great need of God.
One day, Maria tried to get up, but her sick bones and her weak muscles prevented her from doing so, and she ended up falling and hitting her head. She remained stretched out on the floor until Gabriel came home and their children showed him her body. He threw himself on her and wept. She seemed to be already dead. Her breathing was imperceptible.
Gabriel tried to describe to me the despair of his soul, but I will never be able to capture it in written form. Desperate, he went to the field, in the open air, and shouted: «Lord, where is Your word? I preach that You heal; please heal my wife.» He knew in the bottom of his heart that the tone in which he made his demand was not correct. When he entered his humble little house, he laid his wife on a hammock, and kneeling in front of her, prayed to God. After an hour of constant prayer by her husband, Maria’s breathing began to be felt again. God had heard that humble peasant who did not know how to read but had put his trust in Him.
What about you? Are you putting your trust in God? «Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes; but its leaf will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit» (Jeremiah 17:7, 8).
