HUMBLE AS CHRIST

PRINCIPLES AND VALUES

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men And being found in appearance as o man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross (Philippians 2:5-8).

The well-known African-American teacher Booker T. Washington wrote an extraordinary autobiography entitled Up From Slavery. As the son of a slave, his story begins on a plantation in Virginia USA), where he spent his childhood in hardship and misery: his house was a hut, his bed, made of old rags placed on the dirt floor, his to s were nonexistent, and his food, little, scarce and quick to make. He never knew is father or his grandparents. After slavery was abolished, poverty and discrimination followed him for a long time. Despite his condition, in his heart burned the desire to obtain an education, then to educate as many fellowmen as he could. He did all sorts of work in order to achieve his dream. Step by step, with persistence, effort, and dedication, with the support of noble people and mostly with the strength afforded by God, he moved forward until he became the director of the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute. The «Blacks University,» as the institution was called, had more than one million students and one hundred staff members. Booker T. Washington was also a great orator and was honored by various state representatives (including Presidents Cleveland and McKinley), because of his influence in strengthening bonds and tearing down barriers between whites and blacks toward the end of the nineteenth century.

After being freed from slavery, Washington had a lots of determination and a strong willpower as well as deep trust in God and in the future of his people. He wrote: «To those who ask me how I can have faith in the future of my race . . . given the apparently desperate conditions . . . I remind them the vicissitudes to which they condemned us and which the Providence always pulled us from.»

Just like Washington, many humble men and women have reached the peak of their potential in various ways. However, the Son of God voluntarily walked a reverse path «downhill toward slavery.» Jesus is God, but He took the form of a servant and became obedient unto death descending into the lowest of humanity because of His love for you and me. Are you ready to imitate Him?
