For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus’ sake (2 Corinthians 4:5).
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE OTHERS TO SAY ABOUT YOU when you’re no longer in this world? This question does not seem to be ideal to start the day; however, there are at least two good reasons why it’s worth asking.
The first reason why we should ask ourselves how we want people to remember us is illustrated well by Peter Drucker, considered by many to be the father of modern management. He says that when he was about thirteen years old, his religion teacher once went around the entire classroom asking each student, «How would you like people to remember you?» After going around the room, with a smile on his face, the man said, «I didn’t expect you to be able to answer my question, but if when you turn fifty you still don’t know how to answer the question, you’ll have wasted your life.»
The point is that his teachers question impacted Drucker throughout his life, to the point that he often asked it of himself and it became part of his talks and writings. Why? Because, in his opinion, this question encouraged him to renew himself, to look at himself like the person he could one day become.
What Drucker says makes sense. Seeing that we will pass through this world just once, why not be the best kind of people we can be: as students, friends, workers, spouses, parents . . . ? Why not always strive to do things in the best way we can?
Striving to become the best kind of people we can be leads us to the second reason why we should ask ourselves how we want to be remembered: What footprints will you and I leave as we pass through this world? By the way, to leave footprints, you don’t need to be a celebrity or a famous person; it is enough to be born.
Our footprints will be in the places we go and, above all, in the people we deal with. What will those prints say? What are they going to speak about us?
Will they tell the story of a life wasted on personal complacency, or «spent» in service to God and others? Above all, what will they say about Christ’s place in our lives?
I want to be remembered as a servant of humanity out of love for Christ. What about you?
Heavenly Father, I don’t want to go through this world in vain.
Help me, therefore, to cultivate in my life Your attributes of character, and to share with others the wonderful love of my Savior.
