HOW DO YOU HAVE FUN?

«To do evil is like sport to a fool,   but a man of understanding has wisdom» (Proverbs 10:23).

WISDOM

One of Samson’s greatest amusements was to play tricks on his enemies. He enjoyed seeing their powerless faces in light of his constant mischief. Once he caught three hundred foxes—What do you think? Three hundred foxes! I can’t even catch a chicken—, then he tied their tails together in pairs, placing a torch between each pair. He lit them and let them go in the Philistines’ fields of grain. You had to be very ingenious, skillful and quick to carry out those kinds of practical jokes. Surely Samson split his sides laughing when he saw the bright scene he had caused. Then, a smile of satisfaction would appear on his face.

I’ve met young people with great intellectual ability. Some gave the impression they had quite a promising future. However, they used their intelligence to play ingenious practical jokes on others, making up gossip or rumors about their lives. More than once I’ve seen traffic signals destroyed in the streets, bus stops that were dismantled or vandalized stores. Is it worth it to use our physical, mental and social abilities to ruin, hurt and damage others?

The way you use your free time, and specifically the way you have fun, reveals your character. The Bible says that wise young people entertain themselves by learning to be better people in various areas of knowledge. I think that’s one of the greatest differences in the attitude of people who change the world. Those who have become great thinkers, scientists, musicians, writers, among other things, have spent many hours in research, practice and exercise because it gives them great pleasure.

Learning is an extremely appealing activity when you become interested in what you’re studying. Shoes can’t even be forced to fit. The same thing happens with knowledge. A lot depends on your attitude and the way you approach it. When learning becomes a very pleasant experience, then you can say you’ve reached a certain maturity that will take you far in life as a student.

Do you realize how important having fun is? I think today is a good day to ask God to help you take pleasure in those activities that edify your life and help you be a better person.
