HOME ECONOMICS

“And God is able to make all grace abound toward you,

That you, always having all sufficiency in all things,

May have an abundance for every good work”

(2 Corinthians 9:8)

LOOKING BACK on my high school years I remember having taken a class on Home Economics. In this class, topics such as saving, managing home finances and wise shopping techniques were covered. Of course, the subject isn’t found in today’s educational curriculum and even worse, it’s ignored.  Many women who manage their family’s finances would do well in taking this course, because the most frequent complaint is, “There is never enough money, the cost of living is always rising and there are more expenses. How I am going to make it to the end of the month?” It’s true that consumerism is daunting. The marketplace presents sales that are not actually sales and bargains they are only marketing schemes that drive us to purchase.

Managing the family’s finances is a great challenge and commitment for housewives, because every cent in our purse comes from the infinite provider: Jesus. Poverty and wealth are subjective concepts in many ways. Those who have the most money are not the wealthiest and those who don’t have money aren’t the poorest; it’s rather defined by the use we make o( the little or much that we have.

God expects us to be faithful servants in this important area of family life. Let us use money wisely, being aware that we are only stewards of the possessions God has granted us. There is a material and spiritual reward promised to those who give tithes and offerings with a cheerful heart. He has promised to provide for all our needs; and the Shepherd’s Psalm confirms it:  “The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that 1 need» (Psalm 23:1, NLT).

God is interested in our prosperity in every area of life, including out finances. All that He requires is for us to be faithful and spend out money in providing for our family’s needs, without unnecessary waste.

Today, when you go shopping, open your purse, pray thankfully for what’s in it, whether little or much, and trust that God will provide.
