HIS MERCY

«Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness» (Lamentations 3:22, 23).

FLOR NARVÅEZ WAS TALKING on the phone with her sister on December 26, 2013. She was telling her that she did not feel very well. Right after that, she lay down and went to sleep, but she did not wake up the next day. When they found her, unconscious, they took her to the closest hospital. The diagnosis was heartbreaking: she had a brain tumor. Seven days later, she regained consciousness, and the doctors decided to take her immediately to the operating room.

«There is not much hope that Flor will keep on living,» declared the surgeon after the operation.

In spite of everything, her daughter and her fellow church members did not stop raising prayers for her. A miracle was about to take place not only for Flor, but also for some of her relatives who had left the church long before and, moved by the divine intervention in Flor’s life, decided to return. Faith and trust in God had turned their lives around as they saw that a daughter of the Lord who had no probability of being able to speak, walk, or take care of herself because of a brain tumor would return to a normal life. First, she began to walk by herself; months later, to eat without a feeding tube; and finally, to talk, thanks to the patience of her daughter, who taught her to talk just as one would teach a baby.

Yes, it is true that the doctors had given her six months of life at the most, and had even asked her to donate her organs, but the divine Physician always has the last word. This was His word: «No, not yet. I am still going to do great things through My beloved daughter.» Five years have gone by since then, and every day that passes is a new miracle for Flor, because God’s mercies are always new. The manifestations of God’s love are so many and so diverse that the only thing lacking is to develop a sensitivity, an instinct that allows us to distinguish them, value them, and show our gratitude for them.

Life, health, food, shelter, family, employment, friendship—all these things that we have today could have stopped existing this very morning; however, God has renewed them for us. They are not something we can count on or take for granted, since that would lead us to feel we are entitled to them.

They are not our right: they are a mercy from God.
