«Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take» (Proverbs 3:5, 6, NLT).
To celebrate my birthday, Anne and I went for a long walk at Ashridge Estate, in Hertfordshire County, England. Anne had planned everything: she had looked up maps and chose an easy trail. However, at the last minute, we decided to take a more interesting and challenging route. Anne has a great sense of direction, so even though we went on a different trail, she was able to guide us. However, since the forest has almost five thousand acres, it was inevitable for us to become a little distracted. At one point, as we tried to get back on the trail, we ended up meeting a deer herd. «Look!» Anne said, «that is God’s birthday gift to you.»
When I got back home, I thought about the deer. If things had gone according to our original plan, we would have never seen them. Sometimes we do not make progress in life’s paths for fear we will make mistakes; perfectionism paralyzes us. However, God can guide us even when we make missteps. He can also use those moments to show us His grace. In The Ministry of Healing, Ellen G. White writes, «If in our ignorance we make missteps, the Saviour does not forsake us. We need never feel that we are alone.»—ch. 18, p. 249. Other times we do not move forward because we know our enemies are watching us, waiting for us to fail so they can laugh at us. However, «the Lord says: ‘Go forward; I will send help. Because You ask for the glory of My name, you will receive. I will be honored in the sight of those who expect to see you fail.’ » What an incredible promise! What the enemy wants to use to hurt you, God can use to bless you and for the glory of His name (Genesis 50:20; Psalm 23:5).
Fear and perfectionism glue our feet to the ground, as if we had stepped on fresh tar. But faith gives us courage to move forward. We do not need to know all the answers, not even to know the way. If God goes with us, showing us the path, nobody will be able to stop us.
Lord, I trust You with my whole heart, and by faith I move forward in the direction You show me. I do not want to allow fear or perfectionism to paralyze me. As I move forward, I know You will give me additional information when I will need it.
