HIDDEN BY RAGE

Where’s Wanda?” the angry women with the knife shouted. She peered over the assembled Sabbath School members and growled. I’m not about to have my daughter join this church. I’ll kill her first!”

The woman paced up and down the aisles, searching for her child, knife waving menacingly in front of her. «She says she wants to be baptized and follow some strange God. I won’t allow it. Tell me where she is!»

No one spoke. Everyone sat motionless with fear.

At the front row the woman stopped and stared. «If you see her, tell her this is waiting for her.» She thrust the knife into the air and then plunged it downward. The warning was quite clear.

As quickly as she’d arrived, the woman stalked out, mumbling curses under her breath.

What’s amazing about this story that took place in Indonesia some years ago was that Wanda, the girl for whom the woman was searching, was there that morning. She wasn’t trying to hide but was sitting, trembling with fear, on the front row, inches from where her mother stood. She and her friend were in plain sight, but the woman hadn’t seen her.

Rage does strange things to the human mind. But thankfully, God is more powerful than rage. He can take that violent emotion and use it to His benefit, allowing its poison to cloud the senses. That same power later transformed the woman’s heart. Months  later it was her turn to sit on the front row, preparing for baptism.
