My family met at Fall Creek Falls State Park near our home in Tennessee, and we had a great picnic and enjoyed my cousin’s new puppy, Bear.
When the adults started hiking to the falls, we kids decided to take turns carrying the puppy. He was so cute, all snuggled up in a backpack.
Eventually Bear got restless, and so I volunteered to carry him. We were way ahead of the adults, who were poking along talking and stuff.
As we crossed a little bridge I slipped on a root. I must protect little Bear, I thought as I fell. So I didn’t break my fall, and my head hit full force against a jagged rock.
It cut my head deeply, and I was losing a lot of blood. Not only that, Fall Creek Falls is in the middle of nowhere!
But God sent heroes! The first was my eleven-year-old cousin, Andrew. Even before the adults got there, he had ripped off his scrubs and tied them tightly around my head, which helped a lot. Then he ran to find a car phone to call 911.
Next, God sent a kind man who helped my dad carry me off the trail. My mom kept telling me, «Pray, Jessie, pray!» and I did.
By the time I got to the ambulance I was losing consciousness, but I remember asking the paramedics to pray. Then came more heroes—nurses, doctors, and a plastic surgeon who prayed with me too. There were many prayers that day. And many heroes!
