HEALING

SALVATION

«Behold, I will bring it health and healing;  I will heal them and reveal to them the abundance of peace and truth» (Jeremiah 33:6).

Chris Wark was twenty-two years old when one-third of his colon was removed after being diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. Faced with the need of undergoing chemotherapy which did not guarantee healing, improvement or higher than a five-year survival rate, he decided to change his lifestyle. A raw, plant-based diet replaced roasted meat and hamburgers. With herbs, sauna and exercise, he tried to stimulate blood circulation in order to detoxify his body. He got stronger thanks to these lifestyle  changes and to vitamin supplements. But he got the necessary strength to keep fighting from the Word of God. Shortly thereafter, by the grace of God, he was free of this ruthless disease.

The world is filled with pain. The human race is getting more and more fragile and sick. Stress, pollution, and genetically modified food contribute to a gradual decline in health. If we add bad lifestyle habits and genetic predisposition, the probability of developing a disease increases considerably. However, we do not have to despair. Christ wants to manifest His healing power today just like He did when He walked through Galilee. Why should we not claim His promises to become disease-free? Why should we not use the remedies He provided us with to recover? Tie very essence of the gospel is physical, mental and spiritual health, and the Savior wants us to take hold of His strength. Many of us can restore our health and preserve it if we use the remedies which God has provided for us. Water, exercise, fresh air, a healthy diet, sunlight, temperance, rest, and faith in God are the best remedies for the restoration and preservation of our health.

However, even if many can find relief in these medicines, not everyone manages to heal completely. The apostle Paul, who had been an instrument of God in healing others, never got cured of some ailments. In his epistles, he mentions his illness as a «thorn in the flesh,» which he asked God to heal him from, on three occasions. This is the answer he received, «My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness» (2 Cor. 12:9).

Undoubtedly, Christ is the true source of health and strength. However, His ways are immeasurable and, even if complete health is the believer’s legitimate wish, sometimes, the grace of God should be enough. Even so, we can rejoice in weaknesses so that His ineffable power may rest upon us (v. 10).
