«HE WILL SHOW YOU WHICH PATH TO TAKE»

«Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take». Proverbs 3:5, 6, NLT

IN LATE 2012, Salvador Alvarenga, an experienced fisherman from El Salvador, and his crewmate Ezequiel Cordoba went shark fishing off the coast of Chiapas, Mexico. There was a storm warning, but Alvarenga disregarded the weather forecast and continued making the necessary preparations to set sail. According to Jonathan Franklin, «Alvarenga knew the danger of storms better than most … The key … was to read the wind, the waves, and the clouds. A glance at the waves and the clouds was enough for him to calculate the strength of any storm.»* Despite this, «Alvarenga accepted the challenge and refused to change his plans,» and set out to battle the sea.

Unfortunately, the storm was stronger than expected and the small boat was destroyed by the merciless wind and sea. Alvarenga and Cördoba were lost in the vast ocean, aimless and without food. Four months after their shipwreck, Cördoba lost hope of being rescued. He died of hunger and thirst. In turn, Alvarenga clung to life; however, he also began to deteriorate, both physically and mentally. In the midst of his desperation, «he prayed to God and asked for waves to wash him ashore.» And his prayer was answered on the shores of the Marshall Islands, after having spent fourteen months adrift.

Like Alvarenga, you might also be floundering in a sea of troubles and anxiety. If so, now is the time to put Solomon’s advice into practice: «Trust in the Lord with all your heart» (Proverbs 3:5, NLT). Trusting entails the idea of believing as if life depended on it. And when you have that kind of trust in the Lord, he keeps His promise: «He will show you which path to take.» As Longman Ill wrote, «The Lord’s paths are best; they have less obstacles.»*

There is no need to fear. «Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord» (Psalm 27:14, NLT). The Lord goes before you opening the way and soon you will reach a safe harbor.
