«By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth. .. . For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast».
Psalm 33:6, 9
MORE THAN ONCE throughout this year you may have thought, «Pastor Polanco said we would see one promise per day, but I don’t see any in this reading.» Allow me to explain. You and I have believed that a promise is something we will receive in the future; however, the Bible suggests otherwise. In the Scriptures, every word that comes from the mouth of God is a beautiful promise in itself.
With his characteristic pragmatism, Paul says that God «calls those things which do not exist as though they did» (Romans 4: 17). Therefore, when Abram was ninetynine years old, God appeared to him and said, «No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations» (Genesis 17:5). On what basis did the Lord decide to call a childless man the father of many nations? Based on His word, the word that has the power to bring things which do not exist into existence.
Psalm 33 also helps us understand this. The psalmist says that «by the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth. . . . For He spol<e, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast» (Psalm 33:6, 9). There was no light, but God said: » ‘Let there be light. And there was light» (Genesis 1:3).
That which isn’t becomes a reality when the Lord opens His mouth and speaks it. Then, when God says, for instance, «You must be holy, because I am holy» (Leviticus 11:45, GNT), the command is a promise that we will be holy because He has said so. According to Ellen G. White, God asks us: » ‘Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect’ (Matthew 5:48). This command is a promise.”* In other words, every command we find in the Bible is actually a promise.
So, in every chapter of the Bible there are beautiful promises for every circumstance in life.
