HE IS ALWAYS WITH US

ONE WEEKEND IN FEBRUARY 2019, a group of us missionaries went to Alto Conte, an indigenous reservation of Punta Burica, between Costa Rica and Panama. We took medical assistance, gifts for the children, and a spiritual program to prepare the people for an evangelistic campaign we Wanted to hold there a short time later. Everything was very well organized, but we went through a difficult test during the return trip. Allowing ourselves to be guided by GPS, we ended up going down a steep slope; when we got to the bottom, we saw that there was no exit. We were in a place known by the indigenous people as La Vega. The drivers of the two minibuses tried to turn around to go back the same way, but were unsuccessful. We all tried to help by putting objects on the ground for the wheels to go over, but that did not work, either. We were stuck and remained that way for seven hours, under a blazing sun and without food or drink. There were eighteen missionaries, two diabetics, and several children.

A group went walking to find a place with a signal from which they could call for emergency help, but since there were no injured people, we were not given help. we called someone who had a tractor, and that is how we met Chores, the tractor driver. He tried to pull our buses, but was not able to move them; however, his visit was not in vain. When he learned that we were Adventists, he got excited and told us that he had been an Adventist and wanted to return to the church, but did not know where there was one. We gave him the address.

Finally, a simple pickup passed by, which no one thought could get us out of our predicament. The driver said, «I am going to try to help you even though I do not believe it is possible.» He put on the chains, accelerated, and made the two buses go forward. Both drivers, one of them not a Christian, said that it had been a miracle. However, the most miraculous thing was that after those hours of being with the local people, they let us know that they would attend the future evangelistic campaign.

Sometimes it can seem that we are in a dead-end alley, but that very situation is the opportunity for another person to open his or her life to the influence of the gospel. God knows what He is doing. He is in control; our part is to trust, to do what we can, and to give a good witness always.
