“Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens”
(Psalm 68:19, NIV).
AS I BROWSED through the digital edition of Clarín, one of the most-read newspapers in Argentina, I found quite a tempting invitation. The newspaper invited me to register in the section called What Happened Today. Why did I have to register? This is what the newspaper editors said: «We know you’ve had a long day, so we want you to be informed before you head back home. Every day, from Monday to Friday, when the sun goes down, we send an e-mail with the day’s most important news. If you register for it, you will receive it in your inbox starting the very next day.»
It’s true, every day we have to face a long, difficult, tiresome workday. Every day we have to cope with situations that turn our existence into a dry desert. Every day we have to deal with oppressors who try to steal our breath from us. Every day, we face heart-wrenching conflicts and emotional anguish. And believe me, in order to know how to deal with the “length of our days” what we need is not a subscription to an online newspaper.
Instead, what we need to know—at the beginning and at the end of each day of our lives—is what the singer of Israel said: “Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens” (Psalm 68:19, NIV). Yes, today will be long and burdensome, but we can bravely face it knowing that our God and Savior will be with us, bearing our loads. Verse 20 of that psalm even states that we serve a God “who saves; he is the Lord, our Lord, who rescues us from death” (GNT).
We tend to view death as the antithesis of living, but to the Israelites death was more than that. The Hebrew word for death, mōt, alluded to Mot, the Canaanite god of death, the lord of the underworld, «the god of all that lacks life and vitality.” The book of Hebrews states that Jesus destroyed “him who had the power of death, that is, the devil” (Hebrews 2:14).
Today we will have a long, difficult day full of everything that goes on in a planet that has rebelled against its Creator, but we must know that the Lord will be at our side every step we take to give us victory. And that is what we need to know every day.
