Q: When we go to heaven, do we necessarily need to play an instrument?
A: Not into harps, huh? Me neither. Guitar, maybe. Perhaps o a piano. But I couldn’t play a harp if my eternal life depended on it.
I’m not sure who came up with the idea that when we get to heaven we’ll all sit around on clouds strumming a stringed instrument. Probably someone who liked doing it on earth—except for the cloud part, of course.
The Bible records a whole orchestra full of instruments being used for praise. «Sing for joy to God our strength; shout aloud to the God of Jacob! Begin the music, strike the timbrel, play the melodious harp and lyre. Sound the ram’s horn at the New Moon» (Psalm 81:1—3). «Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet . . . praise him with the strings and pipe, praise him with the clash of cymbals Let everything that has breath praise the LORD» (Psalm 150:3-6).
No, the ability to play an instrument isn’t a requirement for going to heaven. And there’ll be plenty else to do besides making music while sitting on your cumulonimbus.
But when you’ve finished exploring the universe, when you’ve studied all the mysteries of life, when your love for God overflows from your thankful heart, you might try humming a few praise songs for Jesus. He’ll understand.
