He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved. PSALM 104:5 NIV
Have you ever been surprised by a surprise birthday party? You walk into a room, and suddenly the lights turn on or a bunch of people jump out from hiding and scream, “Surprise!”
Surprises are fun. A few years ago I was traveling through the southwest in an RV. As usual we were prepared with a list of places we wanted to see and visit. Some of the places were well-traveled national parks, while other places were far off to get beaten path, where only a few visitors are willing to make the effort to get there. One particular day we planned to visit a place in Southern Utah called Goosenecks Canyon. The problem was that we were racing against the setting sun, and as you can imagine, you don’t race in an RV and win. When we finally arrived at Goosenecks Canyon, not only had the sun set but it was pitch dark, and there weren’t any lights in the parking lot. The only reason we knew we had arrived was a little sign. We were miles from night and see the canyon in the morning. I woke up the next morning and noticed that it was still dark, but a faint light was starting to appear on the horizon.
I got up and got dressed and went outside. It was still too dark to see anything, but I walked to the edge of a cliff where there was a bench and set down. What unfolded over the next half hour was like a surprise birthday party. As I sat there, the scenery before me seemed to change minute by minute as the sun came up over this incredible S-shaped canyon before me that was more than one thousand feet deep!
God causes the sun to rise and set. He keeps the earth spinning. God keeps your heart beating. It is comforting to know that God causes all good things to happen!
