«Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest» (Matthew 11:28).
HIS YOUNG WIFE had just given birth to their fourth child, and Milton was by her side when he noticed something was wrong. Why wasn’t she responsive? Alarmed, he called the nurse.
«She’s still under the effects of anesthesia,» the nurse said.
But the minutes passed, and she was still unresponsive. Then Milton asked the nurse to call the doctor. The medical examination revealed that his wife had suffered a rupture in her uterus and was bleeding profusely. Milton had never prayed before, but that day he prayed and waited.
«Please, God, save my wife,» he said. «She’s too young to die.» Then came the devastating news. The medical team did everything they could, but without success. Milton ran to the room where his beloved lay and, laying his head on her body, he wept. Then he lashed out at God.
«I prayed asking You to heal her and You did nothing. I don’t want to have anything to do with You!» The day before the funeral service, Milton was near the coffin when someone touched his shoulder. It was a friend, Alan. After expressing his condolences, Alan handed him a card with his phone number on it and told him he could call him at any time. He was still under the emotional impact of the loss of his wife when, days later, Milton learned that he had also lost his job. Desperate, he decided to take his own life. He went out onto the road, ready to throw himself in front of a car, when he thought he heard a voice saying, «Why don’t you call Alan?» And so he did. The meeting took place at Milton’s house. Then Alan read to him today’s verse: » ‘Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.’ » «Rest is what I need,» Milton said. «But how can I find it?» «You can have it right now, if you just ask,» Alan replied.
The story says that Alan told Milton that day, not just about the rest that only Jesus can give, but also of the salvation that only He can bring. And as Milton listened, two questions came to his mind: «Is this the same God whom I was cursing just a few days ago?»
«Why has no one told me about these things?» Then he remembered that his wife had told him about that wonderful God. «At that moment I could understand,» he would later write, «what she had tried to tell me. Then I knelt down, recognized my sin, and accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior. That day I handed Him my burden, and He gave me His rest.»
What an exchange! We give Jesus our burdens and He gives us His rest. The question is: Will we go to Him now with our burdens, or will we leave Him waiting?
Dear Jesus, at this moment I accept Your offer.
Please receive my burden of concerns and give me, in return, Your sweet peace.
