GOLDEN SCARS

«God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God» (1 Corinthians 1:28, 29, NLT).

Kintsugi is an ancient Japanese art used to repair broken ceramic plates or jars instead of throwing them away. What is extraordinary about this technique is that, instead of using visible glue, the Japanese use lacquer dusted with powdered gold, thus highlighting the imperfections. The idea is that the «scars,» the gold seams of a repaired object, make it much more beautiful because they tell a story of redemption. Through this technique, what would have become trash is transformed into a precious treasure.

God is a master craftsman who uses our worst mistakes to tell a powerful story of redemption. However, we are often ashamed of our scars; we want to edit the past and pretend it never happened. We think we will have greater influence and prestige if we anear to be perfect. This could not be further from the truth!

In Soul Detox Christian author Craig Groeschel explains it this way: «We may impress others with our strengths, but we connect with others through our weaknesses.» The golden scars we bear on our hearts give glory to God, who healed us. They also give us a unique opportunity to draw closer to people who have, or have had, similar wounds. They are a symbol of hope!

Holes and cracks allow light to go through. «When things break apart. the broken pieces allow many things to come in, and one of those is God’s presence,» writes Shauna Niequist in Bittersweet. Ironically, the imperfections and mistakes we desperately try to hide can be ideal tools in God’s hands. Let us allow Him to heal us and may our scars tell the story of His wonderful power.

Dear Lord, thank You because You can turn my shame into a symbol of hope. Please give me the courage and emotional integrity I need to be authentic, to tell my real story to glorify Your name.
