When I was a child, we drove through St. Louis many times, and each time we looked in awe as we drove past one of the most famous monuments built by humans, the St. Louis Arch. As a child I knew people could ride up the elevator to the top of the arch, but I never got the opportunity to go up. I told myself that someday I would return and go to the top. It was a goal I never forgot. When the opportunity came for my family to drive through ST. Louis, I made plans to take my family to the top of the arch. We found some parking and walked to the base of one of the legs of the arch. There were elevators in each leg and a whole underground area for tourists to explore, with museum, a documentary to watch, and a gift shop. We found the ticketing boot, got tickets, and went to the line to take the elevator up. Each elevator was a pod that looked like a giant egg.
These were not ordinary elevators, though. Since the arch was curved, the elevators were created in a special way to adjust to the angle as they climbed higher and higher. At the bottom, the elevator shaft was almost vertical, but by the time it neared the top, the elevator pod had adjusted to be traveling almost horizontally. When it stopped, we got out and walked a few more feet to the very top of the arch where there were a few small windows allowing visitors to look hundreds of feet down to the ground.
Life is can be very unpredictable. Sometimes we move to a new city or sometimes our family situation changes. Sometimes we have to change schools or make new friends. Making adjustments reminds me of that elevator we rode in. As the situation around it change, the elevator adjusted to the new direction. Even though we will have to experience changes, ask God to help you adjust to those changes. Cling to God’s promise of a special plan for your future.
