GOING HOME

«The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell in it forever» (Psalm 37:29).

«Well, I ain’t gonna need this house no more, ain’t got time to fix the shingles, ain’t got time to fix the floor, ain’t got time to oil the hinges nor to mend the window panes; ain’t gonna need this house no longer, I’m getting ready to meet the saints.» That’s what the lyrics to a catchy Christian song from the 1900s said. Unfortunately, even today, many people believe that preparing to go to heaven means belittling life here on earth. American Pastor and Author Randy Alcorn, wrote in «Heaven: The Way Home,» «When we think of heaven as something from beyond, our current lives seem non-spiritual, as if they don’t matter. When we grasp the reality of the New Earth, our present lives suddenly become important.» This little blue planet becomes our home forever. Eternal life involves returning home to our beautified and renovated house. There is no contradiction or dichotomy between living responsibly and lovingly here on earth and preparing for heaven.

If we do it with Christ, everything prepares us. From fixing shingles to doing a postgraduate degree; from oiling the hinges to learning a second language. Even if we pray that Jesus will return sooner, we can design a business plan for the next ten years. It is not a waste of time, nor does it show a lack of faith. It is administering responsibly the talents God gave us, knowing that our lives matter.

«Conversations with loved ones are important. Work, free time, creativity, and intellectual stimulation are important. Laughter matters. Service is important,» wrote Randy Alcorn. «Our present life on earth matters, not because it is the only life we have, but precisely because it is not: it is the beginning of a life that will continue without end.»

Lord Jesus, I want to wait for You actively.
I want to make the most of every opportunity to be trained, grow, and serve You better. My work is important:
it prepares me for the responsibilities You will give me on the New Earth (Revelation 22:3).
My daily life is no less spiritual than going to church or singing hymns.
Every moment I share with You makes my love for You grow.
Every time I look for Your presence, my desire to see You return, grows stronger.
