«Is anyone thirsty? Come and drink—even if you have no money! Come, take your choice of wine or milk—it’s all free!» (Isaiah 55: l, NLT).
BUYING WITHOUT MONEY? Isn’t that a paradox? When speaking of buying, it is understood that there is a price to be paid for having the right to a good or service that is on sale. However, prophet Isaiah’s invitation is to buy «even if you have no money.» What does he mean by that?
What the prophet is telling us is that the price has already been paid. What has cost us nothing, cost God everything: His beloved Sons life, because He loved you and me. That is why He now extends an invitation to everyone: rich and poor, free men and slaves, Jews and gentiles. . . Everyone can come and drink «the water of life freely» (Revelation 22:17).
But, be careful! It is not about drinking from any fountain. It is from «the water of life» that only God can offer. Because, anyone who drinks from any other source, «will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life» (John 4:13, 14).
Do you want to drink from that fountain? There is only one condition to do so: to thirst; with the thirst of an individual who acknowledges his need for God; and who «is well aware that he has no merits of his own to offer to God as a price for the precious gift of salvation.”
That is right. You cannot buy it; or pay for it. It is God’s gift. Would you like to receive it? Clovis G. Chappell illustrates this reality very well. t He says that in certain oriental cities, where water is very scarce, it is customary to see street vendors offering the precious liquid for a price.
«God’s gift,» cries the vendor. «Who wants to buy it?»
But sometimes someone pays for the whole supply When that happens, the benefactor asks the vendor to give the water away instead of selling it. Then the offer is different.
«God’s gift,» cries the vendor this time. «Who wants to receive it?»
«All that man can possibly do toward his own salvation is to accept the invitation, ‘Whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely’ (Revelation 22:17)»—Selected Messages, Book l, p. 343.
Dear Jesus, today I want to thank You because You paid for my salvation with Your precious blood.
Please quench my thirst for You with that living water that «springs up into everlasting life,» which you offer freely to anyone who believes in You.
