«Where is another God like you, who pardons the guilt of the remnant, overlooking the sins of his special people?». Micah 7:18, NLT
A WHILE BACK, I read a BBC report about the strange case of Rebecca Sharrock, an Australian woman who was diagnosed with a syndrome called Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory, or hyperthymesia. Those who have hyperthymesia can remember in great detail each and every single thing that happened to them. Rebecca recalls, «When I was about a week old I remember being in this pink cotton blanket.»
I must confess that when I read the first paragraphs of the report, I was astonished and a bit jealous because I’m not «gifted» with such an exceptional memory. Now, that’s because we consider the inability to remember, as well as losing our memory, as a shortfall or weakness (and, of course, in some cases it can be a problem). But I soon changed my mind about wanting to have hyperthymesia, because as Rebecca points out, it’s very difficult for her to deal with memories of insults, mocking, and betrayals she has experienced throughout her life. If that were not enough, «her extraordinary memory makes her feel like she’s in an emotional time machine. ‘If I’m remembering an incident that happened when I was three, my emotional response to the situation is like a three-year-old, even though my mind and conscience are like an adult.’ «*
Rebecca Sharrock’s story made me value my brain’s ability to forget certain events that happened in my life. It has also led me to meditate on our wonderful God who, despite having an infinite memory, decides to forget my sins every time I ask for forgiveness. And to me that is truly good news! God forgets!
In a verse Jews usually read on the first day of the New Year,» the prophet Micah exclaims, «Where is another God like you?» because He «pardons the guilt of the remnant» and overlooks their sin.» And Isaiah 43:25 says, «l will not remember your sins.» Yes, God is able to forget your rebellion, your disobedience, your transgressions. His ability to overlook our transgressions is one of the attributes that makes no one else be like God.
But the idea that God decides to forget our offenses not only speaks to me of His forgiving love, motivates me to forget, or at least overlook, the wrongs committed against me by those around me.
